More than 160 participants attended the seminar on Sustainable production for Vietnam's textile and garment supply chain in Ho Chi Minh City

On May 13, 2022, at Landmark 81 building, Ho Chi Minh City, the Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association (VITAS) and the International Finance Corporation (IFC) jointly organized a seminar with the theme: "Sustainable production for the textile supply chain". More than 160 delegates representing textile, garment, fashion, inspection and brands... in the southern region attended.
The seminar aims to create favorable conditions for Vietnamese textile and garment enterprises to access the services of inspection, assessment and factory evaluation in accordance with the standards of exporting goods to key markets, to grasp solutions for traceability of products from raw materials to strengthen the connection of textile enterprises. Thereby contributing to the implementation of commitments in new-generation free trade agreements and building a sustainable Vietnamese textile and garment brand in the international market.

 

Mr. Vu Duc Giang – Chairman of VITAS

Speaking at the opening of the seminar, Mr. Vu Duc Giang – Chairman of VITAS said that in the first 4 months of 2022, the textile and garment industry exported USD 11 billion. Expected export in 2022 is about USD 47-48 billion. After analyzing the opportunities and challenges of Vietnam's textile and garment industry, Mr. Giang clearly outlined solutions for the textile and garment industry to develop sustainably. These are: businesses must invest in standards in the evaluation system according to the requirements of the brands, invest in infrastructure, equipment, wastewater treatment system with modern technology, invest in cooling system… to ensure working environment for employees; Apply labor policies in accordance with the requirements of labor law, FTAs ​​and brands; Develop roadmaps and solutions for using recycled and renewable products and materials. Mr. Giang asked IFC to find financial sources for investment projects on wastewater treatment in the textile and garment industry and asked businesses to build a vision for sustainable development.

 

Ms. Nguyen Thi Tuyet Mai - Deputy General Secretary of VITAS

After giving an overview of the textile industry, Ms. Nguyen Thi Tuyet Mai - Deputy General Secretary of VITAS analyzed the sustainable production orientation for the entire textile and garment supply chain in Vietnam. Ms. Mai clearly stated the strong commitments of the Government of Vietnam as well as the requirements of customers. Sustainable business development must ensure 3 elements including 3 P's: People - Planet - Profit, like a tripod. Mai affirmed that, in order to achieve sustainable growth, it is necessary to "greenify Vietnam's textile and garment industry". In the recommendations for businesses, 5 main solution packages are introduced. These are: Safe and flexible adaptation to the Covid pandemic; Market solutions; Human resource development solutions; Digital technology solutions and Compliance with labor and environmental regulations. These solutions are to strengthen supply chain linkages and contribute to building a sustainable Vietnamese textile and garment brand.

The delegates also listened to representatives of enterprises in the inspection service sector: Ms. Lina Vo - Regional Director of Analysis and Sustainability Services, East SEA Service, Bureau Veritas Company presented a one-stop sustainable solution; Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Ha - Deputy General Director of HQTS Company talked about quality challenges in the supply chain for sustainable operations; Ms. Ngoc Tuyen - Laboratory Manager of QIMA VN Company discussed about smart solutions that bring safety and reliability to global commerce; Mr. Augustino (Vien Nguyen) - IDFL Quality & Auditing Director shared about counterfeits and authentic in fashion industry.

The seminar not only creates a forum for businesses, international organizations and brands to exchange information, analyze and evaluate strategies, current status, advantages and disadvantages in implementing production and business according to the sustainable direction for Vietnam's textile and garment supply chain, but also as a bridge connecting businesses with domestic and international partners. The seminar opened more opportunities for cooperation between textile enterprises and companies providing inspection solutions, product inspection & factory assessment in production development with green growth and sustainable development.

The seminar participants highly appreciated the presentations, experience and enthusiasm of the speakers and wished that VITAS, together with IFC and other international organizations, would continue to have other seminars, training courses and forums on new techniques, technologies, materials, digital transformation... in the textile & garment industry to meet the requirements of free trade agreements, strengthen cohesion in the supply chain as well as contribute to sustainable development of Vietnam's textile and garment industry.
